Probably because if we had acted back in the 70s though would have been hard. We might have had a chance to turn things around. Pretty much too late now.
Americans in general seem to have lost the ability to put historical people and events into the context of the era in which they existed. Efforts to erase or rewrite history are very troubling.
I think we're stuck in a rerun, and Democrats will fund-raise for the next eight years to "impeach Trump!" Republicans spent the last eight years fund-raising to impeach Obama. Congress did actually come close to impeaching Clinton. Now, consider the odds of the current Congress agreeing to a formal examination of Trump's competence to hold office.

When you get back to the subject of Confederate statues, please note this fact about our founding fathers, Jefferson, Washington, etc: while they did own slaves, they knew it was wrong and not good for the country as proved by Article One, Section 9 of the Constitution:
“States are allowed to continue the slave trade until 1808, at which point Congress will make it illegal.”
.... long before the emancipation proclimation. They deserve statues just for this (and of course they were not traitors).

now go look at your country in comparison with everything that has to do with 'quality of life'. hunger/homelessness/health care/educational potential/employment/stress factors re: health...

Trump may be the Ring Master, but he's a few elephants short of a full circus. Matter the fact, he's short a high-wire and clowns and dancing horses. What a strange kind of circus this is?
We get is a guy in a top hat telling the rubes it's gonna' be the "Greatest Show on Earth". In one ring were old statures and heritage flags, the other had a genuine western hat in the ring, but no sheriff, just local politicians smiling with their thumbs up.
Then the show was over. I heard people saying that it was a great show. Maybe I missed it or lack imagination, but what kind of circus convinces show-goers they see elephants, death defying high-wire, dancing horses and clowns. And, you can't convince them otherwise, "fake news", they say.
Outside,the townspeople were out to 'tar n' feather' the show producers and other pick pockets, but the cops created a smoke screen and the scoundrels got out of town..
We are dealing with a pathology, the Ring Master has delusions of his own circus. What I can't figure out is how he gets other people to see his delusions. We are going to need professional cult deprogramming on a national scale (for real).
I love to read the well composed and learned comments posted here. My question would be, to what end? Of what change can these commenters accomplish? We all know that Rump is no president at all. Him and his administration are bound and determined to bound and gag anyone that is now wealthy. We all know this. So, to what end have we accomplished?

Nope, this is all about the message being controlled by a relative few extremely wealthy Fascists and we're all going face a very difficult economic time before it's over....if we survive.
Anyone who thinks American 2-Party System is a Democracy has another think commin' Ben Franklin told us it was a REPUBLIC wherein a body of citizens (CONGRESS) Rule as the Voters who count> In a DEMOCRACY its majority rule by Direct Vote, not so in a Republic where an Electoral College System uses Direct Vote to elect representatives who in turn RULE in a Congress by majority vote> Point is USA is NOT a DEMOCRACY
In fact a 2-Party System is more akin to a Dictotorial 1-Party System in that in BOTH of them, 100% of the vote goes to "The System" as everyone else is SHUT OUT> USA 1992 election proved this FACT of LIFE when Ross Perot got ZERO VOTEs in "The System"
So the reason Trump was elected is the postwar baby boomers finally came to realize that our 2-Party System is totally CROOKED and "AMERICA" had become a BIG LIE

Philip; You raised a good point. Trump resigning due to health reasons allows him to save face while exiting. That I can imagine as I see Trump as a 'Save Face' sort of guy.
It still doesn't get us to 'who would fill the void'...next up...Pence? Would he be beatable in 2020? by whom?
The most surprised person on election night 2016 was Donald John Trump. He never expected to win because he knows he is unqualified to serve the people as president of the United States. He does not possess the knowledge, wisdom, temperment, or experience to serve in this role. Most of all he is not at all about serving others; he only serves himself.
Because he did not expect to win he did nothing at all to prepare himself for this change in his occupation. He is the same old guy who never wanted to help anyone else as before election night. I suspect that he is looking for a way out but his Republican friends are not helping him at all. They are afraid he might hurt them so they are willing to put the future of our nation at risk than to stand up and serve the American public They are cowards. Republican elected officials are not stupid, they see the crazy antics of Trump but are too cowardly to act. Trump is killing himself. He only sleeps a few hours each night. He does not eat healthy meals. He is receiving more criticism than ever from powerful people all over the world while all he craves is to be loved. The fellow is mentally ill. I feel great sadness for him and for the country because we selected him to lead us. I hope this nightmare presidency will end soon with Trump's resignation for health reasons or with his impeachment.

The real problem is that we have reached a critical mass in this country in which there are sufficient numbers of alienated, under employed, undereducated, angry people around to enable a phenominon like Donald Trump. And Democrats are equally culpable for setting up these conditions. JFK and LBJ (of the Viet Nam war, remember?), Bill Clinton (of NAFTA, remember?) and Barak Obama (of "hope and change" - before there was a double down on leaker prosecutions, shoring up of the banksters and the sub rosa push for the TPP, remember?) helped set up these conditions . BIGLY, to use the great orange baboon's term.

Asking if the (R) are going to do anything about Trump, as if the (R) are sane, is an exercise in discognitive thinking.
Anyone that ever, ever thought that Trump was qualified to be president should never be allowed to hold office or even vote. Not that insane clowns are unusual for the Republican party. Trump is just what they look like with their hoods off.
The fact that it is taking them this long to see who this guy is, tells you who they are. In the first debate, when Hillary pointed out that Trump had been sued for housing discrimination, Trump's reponse was, " we settled that law suit without admitting guilt."
That alone should have told voters who this guy is.
War profiteering is timeless and oligarchs never miss when making money. WWl, WWll, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf were all preventable wars, but the money made for the oligarchs was well, priceless. The Afghan war has raged for 17 years and Trump is adding more years, money and blood to that number. What a waste of humanity.
