I want to remind everyone that Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano tried to warn us in 2009 that these organizations and militias were a huge domestic threat. From some of the insider accounts, he's even worse in private, forever in a foul mood, constantly throwing over-the-top temper tantrums about little and big things alike, screaming and cussing at loud decibels, stomping around the room like the spoiled brat that he is, always playing the victim, even of the pandemic, as some kind of elaborate plot against him personally. There's gotta be some kind of big-time reckoning of all this unbelievable crap -- a truth and reconciliation panel of some sort with real teeth -- so that fascism can never take root again. Get rid of the filibuster altogether, along with partisan gerrymandering, the Electoral College, and all the red states' voter suppression laws, adopting automatic registration and common-sense national guidelines for States to follow to make it easier to vote rather than harder. Give Washington DC and the territories full statehood to balance out the systemic unfairness of the Senate, whereby a rural voter in, say, Oklahoma has a thousand times, or whatever, more leverage than a voter in California or New York or Florida, etc. Make Election day a paid holiday, or schedule it on a Saturday so that workers don't have to take a cut in pay simply just to vote, or have universal mail-in voting.

And, of course, the big one: get money out of politics!

There are so many ways to makes this a "more perfect union" if we just try, if we have the will as a people. The problem for a democracy is not that too many people vote, it's that not enough people do. That's how autocrats make inroads with the backing of only a small fraction of anti-democratic powermongers to grease the skids. History is replete with backstabbers like Bill Barr, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, et al.

No matter how you must accomplish that amazing feat, no matter how difficult or intimidating, first and foremost, make sure that you are properly registered well ahead of time. Some states have same-day registration to catch the stragglers. If required, request an absentee ballot and ensure that it will arrive in the mail with plenty of lead time, usually about three or four weeks before November 3rd. If not, you'll have to brave the pandemic and vote in person.

Then, to fill out your ballot for mail-in voting: Take great care to properly cover the ovals with the correct pencil or, more commonly, a black or blue ink pen; only vote for one (1) candidate for each race; make sure that when signing your signature in the little box provided on the outside envelope, it will match your original registration-form signature already on record; place the completed ballot -- that absolutely critical document for the beating heart of our democracy (ours, not Wall Street's!) to continue beating -- into the inner secrecy envelope, which must contain no identifying marks and which is usually a different color than the outside envelope; place the sealed inner envelope into the outer envelope, and seal that one too; then drop it off directly at the county election office, into a secured designated dropbox, or at the Post Office as early as possible, making sure that it has more than enough postage stamps.

Don't give them any reason to reject your precious ballot.

If voting in person at your assigned polling station, take advantage of early voting if available in your state and plan out your day per Rachel Maddow's sage advice: Wear the damn mask; put on warm clothing; double-check that you have in your possession whatever ID is required; charge your devices, maybe grab an extra battery stick; leave home early; bring a snack; figure on standing in a long line for a long time; bring a portable chair if needed and (my advice) a pee bottle (Some precincts might provide construction site porta-potties but don't count on it.); practice social distancing; but, mainly, just get inside that building and mark that ballot!

Our country needs you now more than ever before, at least since World War Two when that era's scourge of fascism was rampaging across the planet.

If (more likely in red, voter-suppression states) they throw a dummy placebo at you (a provisional ballot) because of some snafu in the registration process, then contact the election office as soon as possible and straighten out the paperwork to make damn sure your vote will actually be counted.

Be a proud American! Don't just "stand back, stand by" -- stand up!

Take the flag back! I served in the military, and nothing irritates me more than when white supremacists and other wingers try to claim our common heritage exclusively as their own. It's to the point in America now that when most people see you displaying the Stars and Stripes, they automatically assume you must be a right-wing Republican.

Over the Fourth of July week, I always display our nation's flag 24 hours a day, which has a solar-powered light for at night. This year, a Republican neighbor who recently moved in nearby (He basically seems like a good guy.) had therefore pegged me as part of the "brotherhood," or whatever. He took umbrage, though, when I placed a Biden-Harris yard sign out front the other day along with the flag, which I also display during the election season. It must have tripped his brain like I was some kind of traitor because he has been throwing me the stink eye ever since. Haha, I love it! Some day maybe we'll have a beer and talk it out.

We can do this, People. If our brave heroes -- not "suckers and losers" -- fought and bled and died on the battlefield to conquer dictatorship, monarchy, theocracy, plutocracy, and fascism (Under Trump, it's definitely a kakistocracy.), preserving this already great nation (before Trump) for succeeding generations -- ourselves, our children, and their children's children -- then certainly we can make this relatively small effort, albeit much easier but just as vital, honoring the sacrifices of those selfless men and women who preceded us, by performing our civic duty and casting our ballots to rid the land of this authoritarian cancer once again rearing its head.

The war against democracy never ends. We must remain constantly vigilant.
