The Pacific Gas and Electric Company recently announced that it will be closing the Diablo Canyon Power Plant - California's last electricity-generating nuclear plant. PG&E is planning to close the plant in 2025 - and then the company plans to replace Diablo Canyon with carbon neutral electricity sources. But PG&E isn't doing this out of some deep concern for the environment. The truth is - that the surge of renewable energy in California has made it nearly impossible to profitably run a nuclear plant in the state.
