Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, Earth Guardians, joins Thom Hartmann. President Obama spoke about the high stakes game we're playing with the planet in a speech at today's U.N. summit - saying that we cannot condemn our children to a future beyond repair. As corny as it sounds - children and young people really are the key to the fight against climate change. Which is what makes people like my next guest - activist and hip-hop artist Shoe-Tez-Caht Martinez - so inspiring. Although he's just 14 years old - Shoe-Tez-Caht has already given a Ted Talk and started an organization that brings young people together to fight for a greener planet. He also spoke at today's U.N. Summit on Climate Change. His brother Eat-Squat-Lee joins him to rap "Be the Change."

Starting just before noon outside of Central Park - the People’s Climate March was one of 2,600 other protests around the world Sunday - which together made up the single largest climate-change rally IN HUMAN HISTORY. New York’s protest lasted for hours as marchers traveled over two miles through downtown Manhattan - carrying banners - signs - and floats. Everyone from U.N. Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon to legendary biologist Jane Goodall was there - and the message was clear: if we want human civilization to survive the next few centuries - the world needs to take action on global warming right now. This week - world leaders - including President Barack Obama - are meeting in New York City for a U.N. Summit on climate change. And if yesterday’s massive protests are any indication - there is a deep well of popular support for a world-changing climate deal. The people have spoken and they want action on climate change. The only problem is - the mainstream media isn’t listening.

Why Should It Matter If Poor People Own a TV or Not?

Poor people in America have too many TV's! That's the message coming from the Heritage Foundation these days. As part of a report on poverty released earlier this month - the Washington, D.C.-based think tank released some supposedly ridiculous facts about poverty in America. These supposedly ridiculous facts include the fact that - according to Heritage - nearly 67 percent of poor people have cable or satellite television - that nearly 50 percent have a personal computer - and that 40 percent of poor families have a wide-screen TV. It doesn't take a political science degree to realize the point Heritage is trying to make here. If poor people can afford to buy an Xbox - the think-tank is saying - then they can definitely afford to buy their own healthcare. But is this actually the case? Joining Thom now to help make the case for why poor people shouldn't own TV's is Robert Rector - Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation.
