As we speak - millions of women and girls in El Salvador don’t have access to abortions - thanks to that government’s total ban on that procedure in any form. As a result - women and girls in the Central American country are turning to dangerous back-alley abortions - or carrying sometimes potentially dangerous and deadly pregnancies to term. A new report out from Amnesty International details the horrific situation – and highlights the fact that hundreds of women and girls are dying each year directly because of El Salvador’s total ban on abortions. And - those women who manage to have an illegal abortion and who are lucky enough to survive, face punishments - including years in prison. So - how did the situation in El Salvador get so dire - and can anything be done to help the millions of women and girls who are being denied the right to make their own healthcare decisions?
