Hartmann vs Selig - Why do you hate roads and bridges?

Our nation's infrastructure is crumbling. The Sherman Minton Bridge that spans the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky was shut down last Friday due to safety concerns after cracks were discovered in the bridge's load-bearing parts. The Sherman Minton Bridge is just one of several bridges in danger of collapsing -- As the American Society of Civil Engineers points out, 34% of all the bridges in Kentucky are considered "structurally deficient" - and 12% of the bridges across the nation are in the same condition of disrepair. According to a study by the Urban Land Institute - our nation's infrastructure needs $2 trillion worth of repairs. And America's infrastructure now ranks 16th in the world according to the World Economic Forum. So should we be proud of being 16th in the world - and on the verge of another deadly bridge collapse like we saw in Minnesota back in 2009? Thom confronts David Selig, Conservative Commentator - why do you hate roads and bridges?

Hartmann: How is keeping banks from gambling w/our money "Anti-American"

Mike Hudson, Center for Public Integrity joins Thom Hartmann. Watching Republicans debate - you've probably noticed a lot of talk about repealing new government regulations - in particular regulations passed last year as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform bill. You know - those regulations that aim to prevent something like the Bush-era market melt-down from happening again. At least there's consistency on the Right - as Republicans in Congress have also launched an all-out assault on new banking regulations at the behest of their Wall Street campaign donors - like JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who turned some heads over the weekend in an interview with the Financial Times when he called new banking regulations "anti-American." So why does it seem like Republicans want a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis - and how is keeping banks from gambling with our money "Anti-American"? Over the years - we've handed more and more pieces of our economy to the banksters on Wall Street - and look where's it's gotten us - and the rest of the world. Enough is enough - time to handcuff them with some common sense regulations to that they stop gambling with our money. Better yet - just handcuff them - and lock them up fraud defrauding the middle class out of trillions of dollars - then they might actually learn a lesson.

Hartmann: FL Gov says he'll "just say no" to jobs plan $$

Marie Diamond, Think Progress, joins Thom Hartmann. Even if Republican Members of Congress go along with the President's jobs plan - it still has another hurdle to clear thanks to one crooked Governor down in Florida. I'll tell you how Governor Rick Scott is screwing Floridians out of tens of thousands of jobs! Florida Governor Rick Scott and his Republican buddies in the State Legislature are already suggesting they'll refuse as much as $7.5 billion dollars Florida could receive to fund schools and infrastructure projects as part of the America Jobs Act. The White House estimates that over 60000 jobs could be created in Florida alone - if Rick Scott and the Republicans take the money. But as the Republican Speaker of the House in Florida - Dean Cannon - said last week, "It sounds like the President still doesn't get it...the answer to the current economic problem is not spending more money."

Hartmann: Jobs & The Super Committee

Karen Finney, Democratic Strategist, joins Thom Hartmann. Lawmakers will be back in session tonight - and waiting for them will be President Obama's "American Jobs Act" - which was formally submitted to Congress today. Now it's up to Republicans to figure out what they'll do with it. And according to at least one senior Republican aide - they're likely going to stick with the same game plan they've used all year...and that's saying...hell no - you can't!

Full Show - 9/9/11. Conversations with Great Minds and Weekly Rumble

Thom interviews Edward Girardet, veteran war journalist and author for "Conversations with Great Minds". They discuss his latest book, "Killing the Cranes"...which gives an in-depth look inside his 30 years of reporting on some of the world's biggest wars. Later in the show, Thom debates his guest panelists in the weekly rumble.

Hartmann: New Deal trumps Raw Deal

Thom breaks down President Obama's job speech looking for answers on the most important question everyone asks -- if this is a turning point for American economy and a chance of rebirth of the American middle class. Thom Hartmann's daily take.

Hartmann: The Big Picture Rumble

Brian Darling, Human Events, Heather Cirmo, Conservative Strategist & Karl Frisch, Bullfight Strategies join Thom Hartmann.

Conversations with Great Minds - Edward Girardet, P2

Edward Girardet, Writer and journalist since mid-1970s on conflict, humanitarian and media issues joins Thom Hartmann. His new book is "Killing the Cranes: A Reporter's Journey Through Three Decades of War in Afghanistan". Few reporters have covered Afghanistan as intrepidly and humanely as Edward Girardet. Now, in a gripping, personal account, Girardet delivers a story of that nation's resistance fighters, foreign invaders, mercenaries, spies, aid workers, Islamic extremists, and others who have defined Afghanistan's last thirty years of war, chaos, and strife. As a young foreign correspondent, Girardet arrived in Afghanistan just three months prior to the Soviet invasion in 1979. Over the next decades, he trekked hundreds of miles across rugged mountains and deserts on clandestine journeys following Afghan guerrillas in battle as they smuggled French doctors into the country, and as they combated each other as well as invaders. He witnessed the world's greatest refugee exodus, the bitter Battle for Kabul in the early 1990s, the rise of the Taliban, and, finally, the US-led Western military and recovery effort that began in 2001.

Full Show - 9/8/11. President Obama's "American Jobs Act" Speech

Thom discusses the President Obama's projected jobs creation plan with communications consultant, Eric Burns. Later in the show, he examines whether or not America has made progress in protecting the country since the September 11th attacks.

Hartmann: It's time to give this economy back to working people

President Obama just presented his jobs plan - a $447 billion plan - to put millions of American back to work - and he dared the Republicans to oppose it. The President's speech couldn't come any sooner - because a year of spending cuts brought to us by the Republican Party - in many cases through hostage scenarios - are killing our economy.

Hartmann: Your take/My Take - Choosing Sides?

"Your Take - My Take" is the part of our show where you get a chance to make yourself heard.

Hartmann: Geeky Science - Guts to Brain

Have you ever noticed how many gut metaphors we use in the English language to describe human behavior? Like "gut feeling." And "it takes guts." Well - there is some science behind these phrases because there are open lines of communication between our brains and our "guts" and a new study shows that - in lab mice at least - these channels allow gut bacteria to change our emotions and behavior.

Hartmann: How to stop the Florida welfare drug tests?

TJ Walker, Daily National joins Thom Hartmann. It looks like Republicans in Florida are suffering from a case of selective amnesia when it comes to the Constitution. Last May - Florida Governor - and health insurance fraudster - Rick Scott signed a new law that requires welfare recipients in his state to undergo mandatory drug testing to continue receiving benefits. Not only that - people have to pay 35 bucks for their own drug test. And it just so happens that a few years ago Governor Scott co-founded an urgent-care medical center chain in Florida that administers drug tests - and will probably make big bucks thanks to this new law.
