There used to be a time in America - when as the country grew wealthier - everyone got wealthier. Following World War 2 - as Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was taking hold - and a third of the workforce was unionized - and we protected our domestic manufacturing industries - and corporate monopolies were illegal - EVERYONE got wealthier in America. And then something happened.

Just before 5am - roughly 200 Oakland police officers in riot gear surrounded the Occupy Oakland encampment - before moving in - firing tear gas and shooting rubber bullets on the peaceful protestors. The raid took just 20 minutes - and afterwards - more than 80 people were arrested and the entire camp was dismantled and trashed - including tents - food - and medical supplies. Beginning in January - and continuing over the next few years - the FBI will be setting up its Next Generation Identification - or NGI service - giving law enforcement an impressive new tool to track down criminals - or just keep tabs on the rest of us. This new NGI system will expand the FBI's current database - comprised mostly of fingerprints and mugshots - with new biometric identifiers - things like iris scans, palm prints, photos, and voice data. Also - with the help of new facial recognition software that will be up and running in all 50 states within three years - finding just about anyone will be easier than ever for law enforcement. Currently - the FBI has over 70 million subjects in its master database - and more than 31 million sets of fingerprints - that's as many files as roughly one-third of the population...and counting. So as much as we all like the idea of criminals being found quicker and easier - what does this new technology mean for the rest of us who aren't criminals? Could the FBI's new high-tech roll-out be disastrous for individual privacy?

Last Question...Quickfire! Republican New Jersey Senate candidate Phil Mitsch should have kept this one particular piece of advice to himself - how women can keep their men from cheating on them. On Wednesday Mitsch sent out a doozy of a tweet saying, "Women, you increase your odds of keeping your men by being faithful, a lady in the living room and a whore in the bedroom." Mitsch has since apologized for offending anyone - particularly women - for his tweet. But that got Thom thinking what other advice should Republicans be giving to fellow Republican wives...

It doesn't matter that 75% of Americans support a particular piece of legislation - because that 75% doesn't have powerful, high-priced lobbyists working for them. But the 1% - people who don't feel like paying a few hundred extra bucks in taxes every year to put teachers back to work - they have lobbyists - and all it takes now-a-days are a few strategic campaign contributions and you can own your very own lawmaker - in particular Republicans, but some Democrats too - and make them vote any way you want them to vote. And it's not just about jobs or taxing millionaires and billionaires - unequal influence is pervasive everywhere.
