The new American job killer is Bank of America

Congressman Tim Bishop (D-NY, 1st district) joins Thom Hartmann. Less than three years removed from accepting a $45 billion bailout courtesy of the American taxpayers - Bank of America announced plans to lay off 30000 American workers - and relocate its business-support operations and call centers to the Philippines. Bank of America joins other big American banks that've turned their backs on American workers and set-up shop in the low-wage paradise of the Philippines - where the average family makes just $4700 a year. This exodus of jobs not only hurts our economy - but also may compromise the security of account holders in the United States - as foreign contractors now have access to secure financial data. In the last four years - 500000 jobs have been shed from the US call center industry thanks to this same sort of outsourcing. That's roughly ten percent of the entire call center workforce. So how do we stop this endless leak of American jobs to the developing world?

Full Show 5/29/12: The GOP Platform?

Thom discusses if Romney will adopt Iowa's Republican platform which calls for things like ending abortion and banning pornography. Also discussed: if Governor Scott Walker will survive the recall effort against him in Wisconsin, the latest evidence that the Fukushima disaster is effecting the US and in tonight's "Daily Take" Thom looks at what Governor Rick Scott is doing to secure a Florida win for Romney in November.

Charlie the tuna glows in the dark?

Kevin Kamps, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. Now on to a story that - tragically - just won't go away: The Fukushima Nuclear crisis. Radioactive fish are now swimming in US waters. Scientists have - for the first time - discovered Bluefin tuna that were contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan last year - swimming off the coast of California. Radioactive cesium ten times above the normal level was found in the fish - though health officials say the levels are too low to be considered a health threat. Then again - no amount of radiation is good for you. Meanwhile - back at the crippled nuclear plant - a bulge was detected in the walls of reactor four - increasing fears that the structure holding tens of thousands of highly radioactive spent fuel rods is not sound. Should the reactor four building give way - it could trigger a nuclear disaster even worse than Chernobyl.

The Florida election fix is in for 2012

Right now - this guy - Republican Governor Rick Scott is priming his state for a Mitt Romney victory in November. And he's doing it the same way Republicans have always done it - and that's by kicking Democratic voters off the voting rolls. Last year - Scott told his Secretary of State Ken Browning to begin compiling a list of voters in the state who aren't legal citizens - so they can have their voting rights revoked. Browning did what he asked - and came up with 182000 Floridians who are possible non-citizens. But Browning himself admitted that the list was rife with errors - and shouldn't be taken public - or depended on to kick voters off the rolls. Governor Scott didn't care though - and after Browning resigned in February - Scott went ahead doing exactly that - and already more than 2500 voters have been purged. According to documents obtained by the Center for American Progress - of the more than 1600 Floridians flagged by Scott in Miami-Dade County - over 350 were wrongfully identified - and are actually US citizens who had to provide proof of citizenship to have their voting rights restored. Most of the rest of the 1600 people flagged in the country haven't responded yet - and many likely never will - even if they are citizens - because they have other things to worry about like getting to work, driving their kids to school, and feeding their family - rather than trying to jump over another hurdle to vote. And that's exactly what the Governor wants - fewer people ...

Your Take/My Take Jean-Marc - from the village Trets, So. France

"Thom, I am Jean-Marc from France, and there are many things I do not understand about US politics. Among them, I heard and read numerous times that the poor do not vote in your country. If that is true, could you please explain why?? I really do not get this. Another thing I don't get is why is it that you guys vote on tuesdays and not on week-ends? Don't you want a maximum of people voting? I could go on and on with things I find bizarre in your politics, like why is 51 out of 100 not considered a majority in the senate, etc...congratulations for your show!"

The Good, The Bad and The Very Very Catecheticalously Ugly!

The Good! *Arizona Homeowners* Arizona - like many other states - has taken its share of the foreclosure fraud settlement money and diverted it from its intended uses of helping homeowners and providing foreclosure relief. The Bad! *Ohio Gov. John Kasich* Kasich - and the state of Ohio - are set to execute Abdul Awkal next week for the murder of his estranged wife and brother-in-law. and The Very Very Ugly! *US Senate Candidate Todd Akin* Akin - a Republican Senate candidate from Missouri - told voters during a primary debate last week that he might support eliminating the direct election of Senators - a right guaranteed by the 17th Amendment.

The new "kill list"...making America weaker?

Ryan Mauro, National Security Analyst-RadicalIslam.org vs. Thom Hartmann. The New York Times is out with a new piece reporting on President Obama's "kill list" - a top secret list of suspected terrorist maintained by the US Government that was started back in 2010. Just how many American values are we willing to compromise in the name of security?

Get out your tin foil hat for the new GOP platform

Roger Hickey, Campaign for America's Future joins Thom Hartmann. The Iowa Republican Party has adopted a new platform - one that strips Iowans of their freedoms and liberties. Is this move in Iowa a sign of things to come from the Republican Party nationwide? It's too late for real Republicans to take back their Party at this point - it's been captured by nutty billionaires and fringe conspiracy theorists - so now we just have to make sure they don't win. Because if they do - and this is their agenda - then we should be worried. It may sound absurd - a platform that ends the income tax and mandates teaching the Bible in public schools - but it's stone cold dead serious. And it will affect YOU!

Intrade has Walker above 90% - if he wins, what happens next?

With the Wisconsin recall election just a week away - Governor Scott Walk is hanging on to a slim 4 point lead. Will campaign contributions from America's millionaires and billionaires keep him in office - or will Democrats take back the state capitol?

Full Show 5/25/12: Conversations with Great Minds: Paul Krugman

Thom talks with economist Paul Krugman in tonight's "Conversations with Great Minds." Tonight's "Big Picture Rumble" panel discusses Romney's "bold" call for 6% unemployment by 2016, the end of conservative populism and how it would take the average worker 244 years to match a CEO's annual salary. In tonight's "Daily Take" Thom wonders why poor white Americans favor Romney over Obama.

Big Picture Rumble - Is Conservative Populism Dead?

Marc Harrold, Libertarian Commentator & Kris Ullman, Conservative Commentator & Activist & Sam Sacks, Progressive writer/strategist all join Thom Hartmann. Mitt Romney says he'll lower the unemployment rate to 6% by the end of his first term in office if he's elected President. So then why is he endorsing a budget that will kill more than 4 million American jobs? Plus - The Center for American Progress uncovered this week - 100% of the Republicans calling themselves Tea Partiers and riding this so-called Conservative populism to victory in 2010 - are now lapdogs to Wall Street. Despite running on a platform against the bailouts and against Wall Street corruption - all - ALL - of the Freshman Republicans in the House Tea Party Caucus are now happily accepting campaign cash from either banks that got bailed out, or from Wall Street's biggest interest group the American Bankers Association - or both. In total - these Members of Congress have collected more than $600000 from Wall Street just in the past year and a half- and in return they're voting totally in line with the banksters. Doesn't this just prove there really is no such thing as Tea Party populism? That...and more in The Big Picture Rumble.
