Full Show 9/21/12: Why America's Moving to the Left

In tonight's extended edition of the "Big Picture Rumble" the panel discusses our tax code's contribution to our wealth inequality problem, Paul Ryan being booed at the AARP for saying he would repeal Obamcare and whether the GOP's voter suppression tactics will get Romney in the White House. In tonight's "Daily Take" Thom explains how the country's moving to the left and how the corporate elite are trying to stop it.

Surprise! Another Financial Meltdown on the Horizon

Professor Max Wolff, Economist/Instructor, New School University / Senior Analyst-Greencrest Capital joins Thom Hartmann. Surprise surprise! A new report out says the very banks we bailed out in 2007 and 2008 are behaving riskier now than those that didn't get the bailout. So - now that Wall Street is again up to its same old dirty tricks - is another financial meltdown on the horizon?

Just Asking - Does Mitt Romney Think he's Jesus - Who'll Save America?

In the wake of Mitt's 47% comments - pundits and politicians on both sides of the aisle are wondering just what the heck is wrong with this guy. He's taken each side of every issue - he panders to whoever he's in a room with - and (look at plasma) even may change his skin color to appeal to a certain demographic of voters. The man seems to have no core - he seems hollow. But maybe politicians and pundits are looking at Mitt from the wrong angle. Hear me out on this - because I want to suggest a theory that explains everything about Mitt Romney - his campaign - and what he sees for his presidency. And it all centers on one very personal, core belief he holds - and that's the way he was raised, and how it interfaces with his Mormon religion.

Taking Our Country Back - Jim Graves running against Michelle Bachmann

Jim Graves, Native Minnesotan & Hotelier running for Congress (D-MN, District 6) joins Thom Hartmann. Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann has made some wild accusations during her time in Congress - and looks like they've hurt her. Do Progressives have a chance to take back her seat?

The Good, The Bad and the Very Very Vertiginously Ugly!

The Good! *Broward County Public Schools* The Broward County, Florida School Board voted yesterday to officially recognize October as LGBT History month - becoming the first public school district in the country to do so. The ruling allows teachers to create a curriculum based on LGBT history - which may have otherwise been overlooked. At the ruling, school board member Robin Bartleman said that, "Every child deserves to feel safe, not just in their school, but in their own skin." This ruling in Florida is a huge step in promoting LGBT equality - and stopping the bullying and hazing that so many LGBT students face at schools all across America every day. Hopefully more school districts across the nation will follow in Broward County's steps.

Actor/Activist Richard Belzer on Dead Wrong

Richard Belzer, Acto/Author, Dead Wrong: Straight Facts on the Country's Most Controversial Cover-ups, joins Thom Hartmann. Things aren't always how they seem. For example - remember the Tea Party. By the way the media and our politicians treated these droves of teabag-toting, tri-corner hat wearing white Americans - you would think they were a grassroots movement, authentically angry with corruption, debt, and crony capitalism. We know now that they were just economically-disadvantaged Americas, some harboring racist sentiments, that were brainwashed by billionaires and transnational corporations to rally in the streets against their own best interests. That's the real story of the Tea Party - and yet most Americans still don't know it. And since this great Tea Party fiction paid off with oligarchs gaining considerable power in Congress in 2010 - another fiction is in the works. The Koch-funded organization Americans for Prosperity paid for a counter-rally in New York today to push back against the Occupy Wall Street movement. According to Americans for Prosperity's very well paid New Jersey State Director, Steve Lonegan: "The Occupy Wall Street crowd is nothing but a fringe element of malcontents bent on mayhem and destruction...it's time that someone stood up to the Occupy Wall Street mob." Right...it's time someone stand up to a genuine grassroots movements representing the American Middle Class/ After all - who's shining light on all the troubles the billionaire ...

GOP says 'lazy people' shouldn't vote

Mike Papantonio, Attorney / Host, Ring of Fire Radio joins Thom Hartmann. I've said it on this show several times - the only way Mitt Romney can win the White House is by lying. But even that might not be enough anymore - especially after he was caught candidly telling the truth about what he really thinks about half the nation. So now - the only way Mitt Romney can genuinely win - is by kicking enough Democrats off the voting rolls before November. And Republican state lawmakers like Daryl Metcalfe in Pennsylvania are working overtime to do just that with Voter Suppression ID laws. As are Republican state lawmakers in the battleground state of Ohio - like Secretary of State Jon Husted - who is hoping to win a legal battle and cut off early voting for Ohioans this election since he knows it's minority, Democratic voters who often rely on early voting the most. As are Republicans in the battleground state of Florida - like Governor Rick Scott who's still pushing ahead with an illegal voter purge targeting voters who don't have white, anglo-saxon names. Governor Scott has also managed to cut down early voting hours - and make it a lot harder for independent organizations to register new voters. If you think these efforts to restrict democracy in very important, battleground states aren't going to have an impact on this election - then you're flat out wrong. The right-wing war on voting rights is one of the most important issues facing the nation - with just weeks to go ...

Full Show 9/20/12: Romney Goes Dark

Thom talks about the latest efforts from the right to suppress the vote with "Ring of Fire Radio" host Mike Papantonio. Also discussed: Actor Richard Belzer on his new conspiracy theory book "Dead Wrong," economist Max Fraad Wolff on why the bailed out banks are taking big financial risks and whether Romney darkened his skin for his Univision interview. In tonight's "Daily Take" Thom discusses Romney's Mormon belief in the "White Horse Prophecy," and why this may be the reason he's running for president.

Isn't it Time to Impeach Ethically Challenged Scalia!

Americans have lost faith in their government. Congress' approval rating is at an historic low of 10%. And the Supreme Court's approval rating, according to a Rasmussen poll this month, is nearing an historic low at just 29%. But luckily for these institutions - I have the perfect plan to boost the approval ratings of both: Impeach Justice Antonin Scalia. Here's why....

The Good, The Bad and the Very Very Ignivomously Ugly!

The Good! *Jackson Ripley* Ripley is 12 years old - and he might be the youngest politically active American. Last week - Ripley wrote a letter to Mitt Romney - after he heard about Romney's plans for healthcare. In the letter - Ripley tells Romney, "I'd like to say congratulations on winning the Republican nomination. But, I wish you stayed in Massachusetts. You're plan for America isn't what we need, and would hurt us more than it would help." Jackson goes on to say to Romney that, "Your domestic plans (birth control, gay rights etc.) are horrible!" and "Women should get to manage their own health..." Each night - I tell you that in order to change this country - you need to get out there and get active. You have to do something. And Jackson Ripley did just that. Great job Jackson - and keep fighting for what you believe in.

When will the total collapse of the Arctic ice sheet occur?

Professor Peter Wadhams, Professor of Ocean Physics and Head of the Polar Ocean Physics Group - Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge joins Thom Hartmann. According to one of the world's top sea-ice experts - the entire Arctic ice shelf could be completely melted in just a couple of years - spelling disaster for the Earth. Have we reached the breaking point of the planet - or it there still time to get our acts together - and save the only home we know?

Did you know Democracy was helped by the Pirates?

it's International "Talk Like a Pirate Day" - a holiday that goes all the way back to 1995 - and was started by two pirate enthusiasts: John "Ol' Chumbucket" Baur and Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers. The holiday has since been picked by the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster - which believes that pirates were the originial "pastafarians" and should be considered "absolute divine beings" The Church has also observed a direct correlation between the number of pirates sailing around the world and rising global temperatures. The fewer the pirates - the warmer the planet is. It's no coincidence that Somalia is home to the most number of pirates - and also has the lowest carbon emissions of any nation. So that's the background of International Pirate Day. But in all seriousness, we shouldn't just be recognizing the Golden Age of Piracy today - or all the halloween costumes - and movies - and pop culture references - that pirates have given us on this day. We should also be recognizing the most important contribution of all from pirates...democracy. That's right - long before the United States declared independence and ratified the Constitution - pirates were sailing around the world practicing their own democracy. Yes, they were criminals and killers. But as several historians and pirate experts have pointed - most notably Peter Leeson of George Mason University, author of the book "The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates" - pirates also provided one of the best ...

The Undemocratic Nature of US Elections...

Dr. Jill Stein, Green Party candidate for President joins Thom Hartmann. Part of the reason why there is so much bickering and gridlock in Washington is because the US government is a two-party system. How would our democracy be different with a third major party - and could the Green Party be that party?

Lone Liberal Rumble P2 - GOP leaves America's veterans in the dust today

Marc Harrold, Attorney, & SE Robinson, The Blaze both join Thom Hartmann. You know it's bad in Washington when Republicans can't even pass their own bill. Why did Republicans leave America's veterans in the dust today - and do Conservatives think it's ok to send Americans to war and then not help them when they come home? That and more in tonight's Lone Liberal Rumble
