Greeks horrified...as Universal Healthcare is Dismantled

Just when the austerity-ravaged people of Greece thought things couldn't get any worse for them, their universal healthcare system is dismantled and turned into an American-style death system. As the New York Times reports this week, the Greek healthcare system that ensured coverage for all of its citizens before the financial crisis hit has today been completely decimated by technocrats and austerity-pushers. In the past, Greece provided universal care thanks to employers, individuals, and the government contributing to a fund to administer medical services to the entire population. Even those Greeks who lost their jobs still received health benefits for one year, and after those benefits expired, Greece made sure those individuals still received the healthcare they needed at no cost to them.

The Good, The Bad and the Very Very Hemeraphoniacally Ugly!

The Good! *Faiza Patel* During a panel discussion yesterday at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City - Patel - from the Brennan Center for Justice - and other criminal justice experts argued that the NYPD should have an inspector general to examine the conduct of it's officers and it's tactics. This suggestion comes in the wake of a variety of NYPD scandals - including widespread spying on Muslim-Americans - and the use of controversial stop-and-frisk tactics. All across America police forces have become above the law. We need to reel them back in - and make them do what they are supposed to be doing - and behave the way they are supposed to be behaving. ----------------- The Bad! *Donald Trump* Yesterday - Donald Trump gave Americans more reasons to think he's a joke - after announcing that he would give $5 million dollars to the charity of President Obama's choice if President Obama released his college application information and passport application information. But apparently Trump is unwillingly to release his own information. When contacted by The Guardian newspaper and asked for Trump's college and passport records - Trump's workerbees refused to disclose the information - calling the request "stupid" and "trying to be funny". Now that is the irony of all ironies... -------------------- and the Very Very Ugly! *Republicans in Congress* In the past two years - the number of Americans who have become sick - or even died - from contaminated foods ...

Is there any way to save these jobs before Mitt Romney's Bain Capital ships them off overseas?

The 3 Worst Tax Proposals Ever...

David Selig, Conservative commentator vs. Thom Hartmann - There are a lot of ballot initiatives from coast to coast this election season - including many that are trying to help the oligarchs avoid paying state taxes. Since when did funding the government become such a no-no?

Hey GOP...We Already have a Bill of Rights!!

Besides trying to elect one of their own - Mitt Romney - to the White House, the oligarchs have another trick up their sleeve this election. And that's to make sure their state taxes never go up again. Their plan is carried out in the form of ballot measures - often under the name of Taxpayer Bill of Rights laws - that will appear in a handful of states on Election Day that are aimed at making it very difficult to raise taxes. Such measures are on the ballot in states like Florida, Michigan, and Washington. So imagine a law - or, even more bizarre, an amendment to a state's constitution, that says, "You may not take away any tax breaks that billionaires or large corporations have without it getting at least a 2/3rds vote in the legislature, but you may lay off teachers, state troopers, repeal Meals on Wheels programs, and cut off financial aid to colleges and college students with a simple majority." And then imagine that the law went a step further and said that you can't raise taxes on billionaires or corporations, and you can't close any of the tax loopholes they use every day, but you can easily raise fees on everyday working people, so they're paying more to register their cars or park on city streets or have their garbage collected.

Full Show 10/25/12: Greece Adopts America's Failed Health Care System

Thom talks with Conservative Commentator David Selig on the destructive tax related ballot measures being voted on next month. Also discussed: Thom speaks with Governor Siegelman's daughter Dana about the latest on her Father's case, the untold outsourcing story of the election (Sensata Technologies) and Thom takes your phone calls in "Your Take, My Take Live." In tonight's "Daily Take" Thom looks at how Greece is adopting America's failed health care system at the worst possible time.

Globalism is the #1 Risk Facing Humanity

In the past - diseases like tuberculosis and malaria have been number one health concerns around the world. But not anymore. In today's world - globalization is the number one health risk facing humanity. A new study released this week by the Blacksmith Institute reveals, for the first time ever, the impact of industrial pollutants on communities across the planet. It found that industrial waste dump sites containing lead, mercury, chromium, pesticides, and other toxic horrors, poison more than 125 million people in 49 different low and middle income nations around the planet. And the authors of the study say this is a very conservative estimate - and likely even more people are sickened by this rampant industrial pollution. In fact, the report says that industrial pollution is now a bigger global health problem for the world than malaria and tuberculosis. Just look at what's happening in places like Zamfara, Nigeria. It's a state without children - or very few children walking around. Why? because hundreds of children who work in gold mines are exposed to high levels of lead. Back in March of 2010 - the organization Doctors Without Borders arrived on the scene in Zamfara - and found that hundreds of children had died from lead poisoning - and thousands more were diseased by it. Mortality rates in some villages were as high as 43%. This is a genocide carried out by transnational corporations that have no restraints on how they operate in what were once sovereign nations ...

The Good, The Bad and the Very Very Bibulously Ugly!

The Good! *Australia* According to new reports - Australia's policies to curb climate change could spur on as much as $103 billion dollars in spending over the next four years. Much of this comes from a carbon tax that the country has established. Meanwhile - here in America - our politicians still refuse to acknowledge that climate change exists. Of course these politicians are in the pockets of Big Oil - and don't want to invest in anything but oil. Shouldn't the prospects of adding billions of dollars in revenue to our economy be reason enough to embrace new clean energy policies in Washington? It's time we stood up for the environment - and gave our economy a boost at the same time.

Taking R Country Back - Anthony Flaccavento

For tonight's Taking Our Country Back segment - we head to Virginia's 9th Congressional District. The district had been in the hands of Democrats for over three decades - until Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith won in 2010. But now - the Democratic Party has a great chance to re-claim the seat in Congress.

The Only Person Jailed for Torture is the One Who Exposed It

We all know the Bush Administration committed war crimes when it tortured terrorist suspects. But, the only person going to jail for these crimes is the guy who blew the whistle on all of it. On Tuesday, former CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou plead guilty to revealing the identity of a CIA agent when he turned over classified secrets to the New York Times exposing the Bush administration's torture program back in 2007. Kiriakou told the story of Al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah who was captured and waterboarded more than 80 times. Kiriakou was originally charged under the Espionage Act, to which he pled not guilty. Now - Tuesday's decision to plead guilty to a lesser charge allows Kiriakou to get out of prison within two and a half years.
