Trying to reason with dedicated Republicans is useless, something Obama should have realized. As Mark Twain put it, "“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” While I wouldn't necessarily call McConnell and most of the other people at that level stupid (though Trump is) their policies certainly are stupidly destructive. So that amounts to the same thing.
Thom mentioned it today on his show. Nicole Wallace on MSNBC about went nuts and begged people to stop giving money to this grifter. Trump has collected more than $170 million in donations since the election for his fraud claims. There is no end to the madness of these Republicans.

The Senate has the most power. It takes 22 of the smaller states to add up to California's population. Those 22 states get 44 Senators, California get 2. District of Columbia has a population higher than Vermont and Wyoming. It get no Senators and 1 non voting Congressman. Wyoming is 579000 population (before Covid) and gets 2 Senators and California 39512000 poulation (before Covid) gets 2 Senators. Wyoming gets 1 Congressmen and California gets 53, or 745509 constituents per Congressmen compared to Wyomings 579000. In the Electoral College you get 1 vote per Senator and 1 vote per Congressman. Wyoming gets 3 votes, California gets 55 votes. Wyoming gets 1 vote per 193000 and California gets 1 vote per 718400 population. Wyomings GDP is 34.71 billion $ (VT is smaller at 26 billion). California is 2562.92 billion $. Wyomings GDP per electoral vote is thus 11.57 Billion, California is 46.6 billion. A Wyoming Senator makes the same pay as a California Senator.

I wish we could get rid of the Electoral College, but since it gives the small states more clout that isn't too likely. Perhaps the best we can do is what Nebraska and Maine have accomplished, and award delegates by Congressional district. It's a start, anyway.
What we really need in every state is something like Iowa's non-partisian drawing of House district lines. That would make races competitive again and probably bring Congress back towards the middle where things get done. And if combined with picking electors by district that would essentially make the Electorial College a rubber stamp for what the voters really want.
And we do seem to be in a swing of the pendulum towards the right. Besides the countries mentioned Israel, Venezuela and Turkey would definitely fit in. Egypt certainly moved away from its progressive hope in 2011, and probably there are others too as well as the usual suspects of permanently authoritarian states. (Bush's "Freedom is on the march" mantra was a bad joke to begin with and hasn't improved since.) Fortunately over time most trends do reverse themselves, though it can be pretty unpleasant both until and during the shift back.
For the past 400 years it has been the elites that have ruled over this land and used the military to massacre indigenous men, women, and children, so that there land could be sold to newcomers for profit. As bad as it is in the USA it is far worse in the hundreds of nations subject to our country's imperial rule and the destruction of one democracy after another. At the core is a need to establish and perpetuate racism to justify the barbarous actions of the elites and those who do their killing and looting while in various uniforms.
