As I understand it, the Nuremberg trials targeted the Nazi leaders. After WWII the German educational system required that all students learn what actually happened. That seems like a possible approach for us, Post Trump.

Good rant @ 7, but The answer is simple, and the most us peons can do, is get envolved as best we can, and, above all, support the people and issues we believe in. That might require a monetary contribution. This is how the rich getter' done.

Haha, can't blame them for that, I guess. But they do have some serious culpability for enabling a monster when they shared his power bubble. Just like Gen. John Kelly, he did the right thing by condemning Trump for inciting the mob to march on the Capitol. But he enthusiastically helped to implement Trump's disastrous, racist southern border policy when he headed the Department of Homeland Security.
Yep. I had an inmate patient, who was a very respected gang officer. Quite an accomplishment. He had to organize drive by's, protection business, drug supplies, loan operations, collections-- sometimes parts of bodies... but, hey, it's just business... Anyhow he once said that he was glad he got arrested and sentenced. He said: "do you know how hard I had to work to keep all that working??" Well, I feel for Elain and Betsy. Destroying institutions, and racketeering is hard work. They were never, and will never, be prosecuted. I'm sure they just got worn out. So they had to resign just to get some rest. Sedition, insurrection, coup -- words we normally associate with dysfunctional third-world countries can now describe Donald Trump's America.
And our enemies are celebrating! Properly functioning democracies pose an existential threat to the power and influence of despotic strongmen worldwide since no nation can exist in isolation and must form critical alliances to survive economically, politically, and for their common defense.
Trump, a wannabe strongman, committed many horrible acts these last four years in his mad pursuit for personal power as he tried (and succeeded in far too many cases) to tear down the institutions and norms -- the trust! -- that ensure our people can live in relative freedom as spelled out in the Constitution, that we have the final say in how our government fundamentally operates, whether it works for all the people or primarily for the privileged few who have sucked up most of the wealth and benefits of society.
A free, fair, and secure election is the key to a successful democracy, the "beating heart" as they say -- exactly what happened last November! So naturally, that is exactly what Trump (and Putin) are attacking most viciously with their avalanche of lies. Why? Because autocrats, dictators, kings, and queens care only about gathering ultimate power and influence unto themselves and, down to their core being, do not believe in true democracy "of the people, by the people, for the people."
And neither do their fascist followers. Trumpism did not happen in a vacuum. Each individual who internalizes the false propaganda that erodes democracy must accept partial responsibility for all the mayhem -- the attempted coup, sedition, and insurrection -- of January 6, 2021, "a date which will live in infamy," the culmination of all Trump's deceptions.
There is no excuse either. Some may try to play the victim once the horrible realization of their own culpability finally sinks in (if it ever does), that they were unfairly subjected to the heavy conditioning of far-right media, especially on the internet, through no fault of their own. Write it off as innocent naivety. That is wrong -- legally and morally. We always have a choice inside our heads.
Adults (in most cases anyway, we hope) are no longer children and are fully accountable for their own thoughts, words, and actions no matter how they arrived at the conclusions that influence their behavior. The murderer is the one who pulled the trigger regardless of the extent of being subjected to outside influence, such as crazy-town militia groups convincing their "soldiers" that they are "patriots" doing "God's work."
Can it be that the Homo sapiens' collective mind is simply not evolved enough to handle the internet and the exponentially expanding phenomenon of the information age, like giving a cage full of monkeys loaded guns and expecting a good outcome? Or can we truly evolve and use our tools to advance society instead of destroying it?
I worked in the dept of corrections for NJ and CA for 15 years as a forensic mental health clinician. I taught abnormal psych and forensic psych in the correctional peace officer academy for several years. In all of the institutions in which I worked, if there was ANY breach of security, such employee, be it officer, clinician, janitor, nurse, etc WOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED AND ESCORTED OFF THE GROUNDS ON THE SPOT. Not tomorrow. NOW. Because any breach could aid in information being leaked to inmates, who, in turn could use such info to aid in criminal activity. We all knew that. Hence, security swift and unabivalent. That is not what was demonstrated by the capitol police. Now those who were allowed into the capitol were allowed to rummage through the files of any office they saw fit. Did those files contain classified information? Dunno... don't care. Were they engaged and aided in acts of espionage? Dunno don't care. Were crimes commited? Is espionage, sedition, treason a crime? If you are a right wing Republican, well ... dunno don't care. No evidence was gathered. Crime scene was not secured. The perps were all allowed to flee. We have seen this show before. It's the right wing pivot that will result in the perpetrators going free while targeting BLM, ANTIFA, and the left. Saw it after 9/11 when we attacked Iraq, and not the perps who did the crime. This IS America. Land of the greed; home of the slaves. I don't see any of that worth defending.

Some providers got thousands of doses and some got hundreds. My healthcare provider got very little and so far is only doing staff. I am with one of the largest healthcare providers. I agree, it sounds like the end of a dictatorship is like when someone is leaving an abusive relationship. At that point they may be most vulnerable to damage by the partner who cannot admit losing them. But sometimes these gangs do give up--Pinochet did, and in Eastern Europe it was only Romania that had a civil war.
On the other hand, we can't count on that. Personally I'm worried that Trump will start a war with Iran and then declare that he can't give up power during this national emergency. Sort of a Reichstag Fire writ large...at the moment he seems cowed, but is also utterly unpredictable. Pence won't invoke the 25th so impeachment (again) is the only option. The Senate is highly unlikely to convict, but it is certainly better to try than just count down the days and hope.
At the risk of sounding pollyannaish, this video clip inspires hope that Biden's newly nominated leadership for the Department of Justice will hold accountable those who have flagrantly violated the letter of the law as well as the spirit of the Constitution during the soon-to-be previous administration -- without the stench of political finaglings and personal vendettas so prevalent under Trump's mob-boss rule.
