According to the data I can find online, here are the numbers for confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the USA:

• 3.1 million active cases. 'Active cases' means people who currently have COVID 19.
• 1.9 million resolved cases. 'Resolved cases' means people who had COVID 19, and who no longer do, because they either recovered or died.
• 160,000 deaths.

To calculate the death rate, we do not consider active cases because we don't know what's going to happen with them. The only numbers we use are the resolved cases (1,900,000) and deaths (160,000). A little math later...
