A slight change I might have made (though your point is clear!) is to have used the demise of the KNOW-NOTHING Party (1855+\-) instead of the WHIGS, who, as you know, had some decent philosophies, and evolved (in part) to the "Party of Lincoln.)

He threatens if he loses, he'll punish us United Statesians with a "Greater Depression"? Well, I know that if he wins, we will have a Greater Depression that will be even worse than what he can imagine, because he plans on taking away the Postal Service, our Social Security, and Medicare, stripping millions of United Statesians from what we've been depending on for the last 60 years or so. Who will be left over to buy anything? The rich few? There aren't enough rich people to buy enough food, gas, or toilet paper to keep the businesses afloat. We need to get that criminal out of the White House and put him in his place, which is either in jail or 6 feet below, where he belongs. And if he wins, there will be a major uprising. He can depend on that! We won't take that lying down!

The USPS had its own internal law enforcement agency. I believe it's called the United States Postal Inspection Service. One of the many crimes they prosecute is mail tampering, which it seems to me the GOP is engaging in during this election year. Where are they and what can they do?

It reinforces my superstition that if this (human) "experiment" (as Thom very interestingly described it) is to survive and evolve, all are needed on board (inclusiveness is a hard-wired characteristic of Democracy). (I could even go that far as claiming that we deserved the current presidency. As no one is perfect, it has revealed an ugly/dark part/side of ourselves. It is best to confront it and cure it, than "bury" it deep inside us and "go back to 2016". Evolution is better than "denial").

The Biden/Harris combo shows (to me) that the "Rep" side of the Dems (the crypto-Reps) are still winning their "left" or "Roosevelt" side. Biden's team waited too long (imo) to announce the running mate.Possibly the intra-"battle"was fierce? I would like to read about commitments of Biden/Harris with respect to who is going to run the federal executive departments like education, health&human services, treasury, labor, commerce, state etc. Are they simple ready to just win the nomination or are they (getting)prepared to run the country? How can they convince me that this election is really crucial if they are not behaving as if they are true leaders with specific proposals as to how the country should be run since....yesterday? What is the purpose of this "ticket"? Simply to win and pacify people that everything WILL (when? afterlife?) be allright? Who is going to be the team that will (attempt to) turn things around? Just the two of them? I do not think they suffice. The future "promise" of Kamala 2024? A VP is #2. If #1 is too slow to take the initative, #2 should step in and take the initiative whenever #1 needs to take a rest, BEFORE the elections and show us with whom they are going to work with to materialize any of their FDR and Lincoln and other American inclinations they may have. If short of ideas, they should do well to consult people like Sanders, the math guy (Yang), John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert to name just a few.

This "election" will be very interesting. We'll all find out if the death grip the ruling class has on our nation is irreversible or not. If COVID-45 "wins" again, probably not, but if the Biden/Harris ticket wins, our nation's direction is still problematic. Both are, IMO,totally immersed in our country's "corporate culture", and won't persue the people's interests over the interests of the corporations, and our new brand of "disaster capitalism" and profits "uber alles".
The big question remains; If the Dems win, can the Biden/Harris ticket channel their inner FDR inclinations, if, they even exist?

I'm a Democratic Socialist but I understand these disaffected Republicans are important for creating the big tent we'll need to shutout the Trump Republicans for the foreseeable future. Your guest hit on my compromise solution when he said he wants to keep the free markets and just clean out corruption, but if I'm willing to come his way, he must come ours.
On my website, I have an essay, "Mass Decency," where I layout a version of DS that keeps markets and does not allow the government to own property, per se, but it eliminates poverty, extreme wealth inequality and financial markets for investment, because these are the sources of inequality that frustrate democracy; however, it still promotes entrepreneurship and competition among businesses that provide products and services for the consumer markets. I welcome anyone, especially conservatives, to consider and debate it with me.

You would not think that a party that only supports the 1% would last very long. But the money owns the mainstream media. Which it uses very effectively to brainwash a base. It is incredible, they are going to take away Medicare and Social Security from its base and they love it. As long as it is racist, love guns and claims to be law and order it will last. Its base supports the 1%.
Thom, the blm movement at its core has become a terrorist movement. They will burn themselves out with their outlandish acts like the $65 million dollars in damage they caused in Chicago in just one of their events.

I just participated in a Black Lives group that has been on our boardwalk for 50 nights. We are in a small town on a major highway. "A man" in a big-ass-truck stopped at a traffic light across from us, pushed his upper body out the window and screamed WHITE POWER several times. The 20 yr old black guy next to me laughed, and then prepared his phone camera in case the guy went around the block.
Trump has unleashed this unholy mess and the GOP will never be the same. That's a good thing. I think they will survive, but if not, there are plenty of diverse opinions within the left and independent ranks.

All of this is done with Republican Party approval. Except for the break away Republicans (the few with a brain) called the Lincoln Project. It will take years for Biden to undue the mess. About the length of time that people will remember what caused the mess.
From Europe, we understand how he has been elected, but we don't understand how the impeachment hasn't been a success.
I've read more and more republicans are against him. Let's hope he goes away and can't face Biden during the november election.
