Are Cons Reinventing Labor Day into Billionaire's Day?

For thirty years - Republicans have been waging a war on labor - a war on working people. And they've been incredibly successful - with unionized workers now representing just a tenth of the workforce today - when they used to make up a third of the workforce a half century. Today in America - this war on labor is picking up steam. Republican Governors like Scott Walker in Wisconsin, John Kasich in Ohio, and Chris Christie in New Jersey have launched attacks on public sector workers - trying to deny them collective bargaining rights. Republicans are close to killing off the Post Office - throwing a half-million unionized postal workers out of a job. With the help of Conservatives in Hollywood - teachers' unions are under attack, as well. Tragically, the United States is no place to for organized labor anymore - and as a result - no place for the Middle Class, either. Which brings us to Labor Day - the reason why a lot of us had Monday off work. To Republicans - it's no longer about passing legislation to make it harder to unionize - or cutting spending so that unionized public workers get laid off - or endorsing smears against teachers' unions. They've already done all that - now it's about re-writing the history of America - ensuring the next generation doesn't even know that the United States USED to be a place where organized labor flourished.

Christine Pelosi, Democratic strategist/author-"Campaign Boot Camp" joins Thom Hartmann. From the Democratic National Convention.

The Good, The Bad and the Very Very Metagnostically Ugly!

The Good! *Michael Hayden* Hayden - the former Bush administration NSA head and CIA director told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that any attack by Israel or the US on Iran would only delay the country's nuclear weapons program - and would in fact push the country to develop a nuclear bomb sooner. The Bad! *Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne* Horne is on a mission to stop the use of medical marijuana in Arizona. On Thursday - Horne filed a suit with federal court - arguing that, "possession, distribution and cultivation of marijuna are all forbidden by federal law, and state authorization of these activities is pre-empted (by federal law)." and the Very Very Ugly! *Mark Harris* Harris was a Pennsylvania delegate at last week's Republican National Convention. Before the convention - he went on vacation with his wife to Disneyworld - where he noticed that an employee working at the America exibit at the Epcot theme park was of Mexican descent. And - he was so astonished that there was a Mexican employee at Disneyworld that he took to his blog to rant about it. In a blog post, Harris wrote that he and his wife were both "highly offended" that a "person from Mexico" was working at the America exhibit.

How Many Times Will We Hear The Medicare Lie from the GOP?

Brian Darling. Heritage Foundation, joins Thom Hartmann. Paul Ryan told a lot of lies in his speech at the RNC last week - but his lies about Medicare were the most blatantly false. Are Americans really prepared to let Romney and Ryan lie their way right into the White House?

Is America better off than 30 yrs ago when the Reaganomics experiment started?

The Democratic National Convention kicks off this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. And already, we're seeing pretty stark differences between this week's DNC and last week's RNC. One week after Republicans unveiled the most radical major party platform in American modern history - Democrats have put forward their own political platform. Some of the planks include: a full embrace of marriage equality and a woman's right to choose, comprehensive immigration reform, the right for unions to collectively bargain, support for Obamacare, protection of Medicare as we know it, increased funding for the arts, and cutting off tax breaks or job outsourcers like Bain Capital. You might remember the Republican platform included things like a ban on pornography - a ban on marriage equality - and a ban on gays openly serving in the military. While there are too few differences between Republican and Democrats when it comes to the big issues facing the nation like war, free trade, and the corporate takeover of our democracy, there are still huge differences between the two parties as reflected in each platform. Differences that will affect millions of Americans. While Democrats want to keep moving the nation forward - extending civil rights and economic opportunity to more and more Americans - Republicans want to drag us all backward to the era of the Robber Barons.

Greenspan's Body Count

The story of Mitt Romney is a story of two Americans - one that got bailed out and can aspire to the highest levels of power - and the other that got sold out and forced into bankruptcy, desperation, and suicide. Since he can't talk about his job as Governor of Massachusetts passing his own version of Obamacare - Mitt Romney has to talk about his private sector experience at Bain Capital. In fact - he devoted a portion of his speech at the RNC to Bain: But what Romney is leaving out - is a tumultuous time in the last 1980's and early 1990's when Romney's company nearly went bankrupt - and in fact would have - had it not been bailed out by the government. In other words, he didn't built it. As Tim Dickinson at Rolling Stone uncovered - Bain Capital's parent company - Bain and Company - ran into serious financial problems in the late 1980's - and Mitt Romney was tapped to try to save the company. The company owed more than $30 million bucks to a bank that had been taken over by the FDIC. After failing again and again to get the company back on track - Romney decided to play hardball with Bain's creditors - basically forcing them to write down Bain's debt. Romney gave everyone a take it or leave it deal: take 30-cents on every dollar Bain owes - or else he will loot the company, divert whatever remaining assets there were toward paying executive big bonuses - declare bankruptcy - and then Bain's creditors - including the FDIC - would get nothing. The hardball worked - the ...
