Can The Reagan Revolution Be Stopped?
The Reagan revolution continues. Donald Trump just issued his budget, and it contains over $1 trillion in cuts for healthcare, massive cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, sets up even larger cuts to Social Security and Medicare, cuts funding for the Centers for Disease Control and research into diseases like the coronavirus, and kneecaps the Environmental Protection Agency, among others. Paul Ryan may no longer be in politics, and Ronald Reagan may be dead, but the politics of greed and the top one percent continue to totally rule the Republican Party, and have an outsize influence in the Democratic Party. Until the Democratic Party returns to its New Deal and Great Society roots, there will be no serious challenge to the Reagan revolution. And without that there will be no revival of the American middle class. -Thom
