A program funded by both the Bush and Obama administrations to catch and stop pandemics that could kill hundreds of millions of people was just shut down by the Trump administration. The Federal project, called Predict, was looking for diseases like Ebola, AIDS, SARS, and the possible reemergence of a Spanish flu that killed so many people during World War I. The Trump administration's disdain for science, while useful to fossil fuel billionaires and land developers, could easily lead to the death of a massive number of people.

America, which was the leader of the world in science and innovation before Reagan came to office, has now, as a result of Republican budget cuts and Republican hostility to science, become the world's village idiot. Hopefully the European Union will pick up this research and run with it.
