Can the Presidency Regain Its Integrity After Trump?
Even those of us old enough to remember have probably forgotten that in the spring of 1979 the Attorney General of the United States appointed a special prosecutor to look into his own president's ownership of his peanut warehouse, to make sure that he wasn't, in any way, making money from his presidency. The special counsel was republican Paul Curran, and the Attorney General was Griffin Bell. The president, of course, was Jimmy Carter. Now we have a president who is trying to force world leaders into his own failing Florida hotel during its lowest season to jack up its revenues, the Attorney General is spending $30,000 on a Christmas party at the president's hotel in Washington DC, while the Air Force is pouring money into his failing Scotland property. And it all seems to be just fine with the same Republican Party that was hysterical that Jimmy Carter may have accidentally seen a balance sheet from the blind trust holding his peanut farm. How far we have fallen? -Thom
