Thomas Jefferson’s dream - free university
Thomas Jefferson was specific about what should be written on his tombstone - not his vice-presidency or 2-term presidency, membership of the Virginia legislature, architecture or inventions, but his authorship of the Declaration of American Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom and the fact that he was father of the University of Virginia.
He believed that young people should be able to go to college regardless of their ability to pay, regardless of their station in life, regardless of how rich or poor their parents were. He thought that an educated populace was the best defense of liberty and democracy in the new nation he’d helped birth. So the University of Virginia that he started was free.
Ronald Reagan, in contrast, did away with free college in California, saying that the role of the state “should not be to subsidize intellectual curiosity.” State and federal funding for education has continued to be cut. Before the Reagan presidency, it was possible for any American student with academic competence to attend college and graduate without debt.
We must build anew our country on the solid, Jeffersonian foundation of good and free education for all.
Find out how other countries do it and what more can be done in chapter four, "An Informed and Educated Electorate" of Rebooting the American Dream.

"If you're looking for something that connects the dots between the BP oil disaster, the harm it's done to the Gulf of Mexico and the people paying the price, this book is it. In a clear and compelling voice, it explains the worst environmental catastrophe of our time, then shows the way forward to protect this national treasure, safeguard our future and break our destructive addiction to oil."
