The Republican merit badge for hypocrisy...
Congratulations to GOP State Legislator Calvin Hill of Georgia who won his Republican merit badge for hypocrisy. Last year, Hill led a movement in the state to prevent public universities from teaching sexual health and gay history classes claiming, “Our public colleges are not the place for our young adults and future leaders to experiment and experience these types of sexually explicit behavior.” Has Mr. Hill ever been to a college?! Well, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, even though Mr. Hill has a problem with “future leaders” experiencing sexually explicit behavior, he has no problem with current leaders, like himself, making money off of it. Yes, it turns out that Mr. Hill is the CFO of a company that sells sex gadgets and other sexual paraphernalia. Gila Distributing sells everything from “phallic” stress relievers to gay pride lapel pins. Is this is a new requirement for all Republican politicians now a days – launch a public crusade against something that is an integral part of your private life? Paging toe tapper Larry Craig…Paging serial adulterer Newt Gingrich, and hooker customer David Vitter.

"If you're looking for something that connects the dots between the BP oil disaster, the harm it's done to the Gulf of Mexico and the people paying the price, this book is it. In a clear and compelling voice, it explains the worst environmental catastrophe of our time, then shows the way forward to protect this national treasure, safeguard our future and break our destructive addiction to oil."

OUT NOW!
Sucking the lifeblood out of our communities
If I shop in a downtown area full of small, locally-owned businesses, and at the end of the day the store owners deposit the money in local banks, then those banks can lend the money to local people to create or build more businesses, which will deposit more money in local banks, and so on. By keeping money within the community, the community grows. This is how communities in America and most of the rest of the world have historically grown.
But if my shopping trip had been to a mall full of chain stores or to a national superstore, the money stays in town for only a day at best. Every night, all around America, buttons are pushed that - like vampires draining blood from sleeping people - drain cash away from local communities, most of it never to be seen in town again.
Although the companies pay a small amount of their revenue back in local taxes and payroll and services, most of it is sucked up nightly into each company’s headquarters bank in Chicago or Little Rock or New York or wherever it may be. And most of that money never returns to the local community.
This is how you destroy local communities; it’s the opposite of a healthy economy.
