Nearly 850,000 high school students don't have access to a school counselor if they're facing academic or emotional problems. At the same time nearly 1.6 million students go to schools where they do have access to law enforcement! That's right - according to data from the US Education Department - 24 percent of elementary schools and 42 percent of high schools had a law enforcement officer on staff - and more than half of the schools that were majority black or latino had an officer to patrol campus. So why are we spending money on cops in schools - instead of on school counselors? Isn't this just proof of how effective the school to prison pipeline is?
