According to a new report JAMA Internal Medicine published on Monday by ressearchers at the University of California, San Francisco the sugar industry paid scientists in the 1960s to play down links between sugar and heart disease - and to blame saturated fat instead. That report suggests that 50 years of research into the role of nutrition and heart disease have been heavily influenced by the sugar industry. The documents show that the Sugar Research Foundation - today known as the Sugar Association - paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of about $50,000 to publish a review on sugar - fat and heart disease - using sources that the sugar industry had handpicked. Isn't it time that we require public policy to be shaped by research funded by the public - rather than research funded by trade groups with clear incentives that fly in the face of public interests?
