David Selig, Conservative Commentator joins Thom Hartmann. The deal President Obama is pushing for includes closing tax loopholes on corporations, millionaires, and billionaires in exchange for trillions of dollars in spending cuts targeting mostly working class families - a deal that Conservative columnist David Brooks referred to earlier this week as "the mother of all no-brainers" for Republicans. But the Republican "Party of No" - isn't interested in making deals - it's interested in crashing the economy. Speaker John Boehner immediately threw cold war on the President's message yesterday - saying that bipartisan talks are "fruitless" if even a nickel of tax increases on corporations, on millionaires like him, or on the billionaires who fund Republicans is on the table. So how can that possibly be a constructive tone heading into another round of negotiations with the President? Are Republicans - the self-proclaimed "adults in the room" willing to crash the economy if they don't get every single thing they want? And how can they get away with this?

If illegal immigrants are in a "tent city" AZ prison w/temps of 145 degrees - shouldn't the CEOs that hired them be there too? The second we DO start taking a hard-line on corporate crime - especially against CEOs who hire those illegal immigrants that give Sherriff Joe his purpose in life - then prison conditions will miraculously improve. Just as run-down city blocks crippled by crime and poverty are gentrified with new high rise condos and high-class steakhouses - let's gentrify the prisons with corporate executives. Then maybe we can get some air conditioning in Arpaio's tent city - and toilets for the inmates in California...after all - banksters need their amenities.

Joining Thom is Bruce Fein, Constitutional Attorney. Death row in Illinois is closed for business. A new state law abolishing the death penalty took effect last week - saving 15 inmates from execution. Since 2000 - there's been a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois after then-Governor George Ryan called the system, "haunted by the demon of error" because of how many death row inmates' convictions were overturned. Illinois is now the fourth state to kill the death penalty in the last two years - however 34 states around the nation still use it and the United States ranked fifth in the world in 2009 in the number of people we put to death - right behind China, Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia...good company, huh? But while Illinois stops killing people - Texas Governor Rick Perry loves it. Despite concerns from foreign diplomats, judges, the United Nations, President Obama - and even George W. Bush - Governor Perry is pushing full steam ahead with the execution of Humberto Leal Garcia - a Mexican national who was convicted in 1994 of rape and murder. The Obama administration is warning Texas that Garcia's execution will do "irreparable harm" to the nation and break international laws because Garcia was not given a right under the Geneva Convention to contact the Mexican consulate when he was arrested. So isn't the death penalty causing more problems than it's solving in America today? Shouldn't other states take Illinois' lead - and ditch death?
